SEAONC Firm Directory

About

This directory connects Bay Area building owners and residents with qualified structural engineers. It includes entries for engineers who are sole practitioners as well as engineering firms of varying sizes, with notes on the types of structural engineering projects each undertakes.

The directory is compiled by SEAONC, the San Francisco Bay Area’s professional association for structural engineering. Information for each entry is provided directly by the engineer or firm and is not reviewed or verified by SEAONC.

To be included:

  • A firm must have at least one SEAONC member

  • At least one licensed Civil or Structural Engineer must be part of the firm

There is no charge for SEAONC members to be listed.

Choosing the Right Engineer for Your Project

The success of any building project and how it performs under earthquake or other loads, depends on the services provided by the project’s structural engineer.

When selecting an engineer, building owners should:

  • Ask about the engineer’s experience with projects similar to theirs
  • Seek references
  • Understand the engineer’s qualifications

As an example, for seismic retrofit projects, you might ask:

  • Do you have experience retrofitting concrete buildings?
  • Are you familiar with seismic evaluation and ASCE 41 retrofit standards?
  • Can you share examples of buildings you have evaluated or retrofitted that are similar to mine?

Licensing in California

The State of California governs the registration of professional engineers and requires that engineers practice only in areas where they have demonstrated competence.

  • Structural engineering services are provided by Civil Engineers and Structural Engineers.
  • Structural Engineers are licensed Civil Engineers who have gained experience and passed an additional structural-specific state examination to earn the “Structural Engineer” title.

You can verify the license status of any engineer here: License Lookup – California Board for Professional Engineers.

Caution: Using Online Platforms to Find an Engineer

There have been recent cases of individuals impersonating licensed engineers and forging engineering stamps on drawings or calculations. These fraudulent profiles have appeared on freelance websites such as Freelancer, Upwork, and Fiverr, and pose serious risks.

Why This Matters:
Unverified or fraudulent engineering stamps may result in unsafe or unreviewed designs being accepted as legitimate.

If you do seek an engineer online, SEAONC recommends you:

  • Request their license number immediately.

  • Verify license status through the California Board for Professional Engineers.

  • Confirm contact details obtained from the official BPELSG site or company website (avoid relying only on platform messaging).

  • Ensure the design documents and calculations are stamped with the verified license number
