April President's Message

Wayne Low | Published on 4/1/2024
Hello Everyone,

What more can I say of our last meeting, other than it was incredible to see so many of the women of SEAONC come together and share stories about their careers, as well as challenges and triumphs they have encountered in their journeys. Looking out over the audience of over a hundred people, it was both a sign of how far we have come as a profession and a reminder that we still have more to travel. I would like to thank our fantastic planners from SE3, Claire Leader, Danny Pruet and Megan Vandervort, who served as a fantastic moderator for the evening. A special thank you to our esteemed speakers, Wendy Allen, Noelle Yuen, Janele Maffei, and Emily Guglielmo, for sharing your experiences. There were so many memorable moments and we are all impressed and honored to be your colleagues and friends.

I appreciated:
  • The commitment to excellence and the amazing directions each of our speakers have taken in their careers
  • The open and insightful stories shared, which remind us all of why we support diversity in structural engineering and the mission of SE3
  • The impact of having wonderful role models and mentors and why they are so important
  • How your passion and inspiration not only has impacted structural engineering, but also have inspired future generations of SEAONC members
We cannot say thank you enough.

By the time you all see this newsletter, SEAONC would have had our first Trivia night at the DPR Office in San Francisco. We were all super excited to bring this event together and to showcase what structural engineers can do. Who will get the bragging rights for the next year as SEAONC Trivia Champions? We would like to thank Hilti, Simpson, DeWalt and Taylor Devices for supporting this fun event. And a super special thanks to CSI and Ashraf Habibullah for being our Anchor Sponsor. We could not have done this without you.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the upcoming CEC Seminars on the Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Non-Ductile Concrete Buildings. I am sure you all remember all the great Fall/Summer/Spring seminars that SEAONC hosted in the past and we heard that you all wanted us to bring that spirit back. The series will be at the SPUR Center in San Francisco on April 4th and 11th. We have some great speakers and everyone should come to learn about how structural engineers can help build resilience in the bay area. Register and join us.

Our next monthly meeting is on Tuesday, April 2 at SOM at One Maritime Plaza in San Francisco. This month’s program is hosted by the Hensolt Legacy Committee and honors how SEAONC’s members have shaped the code over the decades. Come join Bill Holmes, Jim Malley, Jack Moehle, Bob Pekelnicky, and Tal Feinstein as we celebrate how SEAONC members have led the way. I look forward to seeing you all.
