The SEAONC Continuing Education Committee presents a two-part seminar on
ASCE 41-23 Code Updates
This technical presentation aims to highlight and explore some of the key changes in the Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings standard that is now referenced in the 2025 California Existing Building Code. Night 1 of this series will cover seismic hazard and analysis updates, masonry updates, concrete updates, and ACI 369.1. Night 2 will cover updates to the Tier 1 and Tier 2 procedures, key updates to foundation previsions and shallow foundation acceptance criteria, and major updates to steel requirements.

Speakers
Peter Somers
Peter is a Principal at MKA with 33 years of experience. He is currently the chair of the ASCE/SEI 41 Committee after having served as vice chair for the previous two cycles. Peter has been active in the Structural Engineers Association of Washington, serving as founding chair of the SEAW’s Existing Building Committee and a former president of the Seattle Chapter of SEAW, and is also on the board of the Structural Engineers Foundation of Washington. Peter is actively involved in structural engineering code development, related to the renovation of existing buildings, contributing to or co-authoring standards and provisions for organizations such as ATC, FEMA, and ICC/IEBC as well as ASCE.
Dr. Roy Lobo
Dr. Roy Lobo is the Principal Structural Engineer with the Department of Healthcare Access and Information. He heads the Structural Services Section and is responsible for promulgating all necessary structural amendments to the California Building Standards Code to align with the mandates of the California Seismic Safety Act for Hospital Facilities. He was chair of the ASCE 41-23 foundations subcommittee. He is the Structural Standards chair for SEAOC and was chair of the SEAOC Seismology and Existing Buildings Committees. Roy is also a voting member of the ASCE 7-28 main committee, and seismic subcommittee and on various Issue Teams or Task Subcommittees of the 2026 BSSC PUC.
Nathaniel Gonner, SE
Nathaniel Gonner, SE, is the director of specifications at the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), where he oversees the development of their standards, including the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings. He serves as the chair for the ASCE 41 Steel Subcommittee and is the steel instructor for the SE Exam Refresher Course for SEAOI. Before joining AISC in 2017, he spent eight years as a consulting structural engineer working on a variety of building projects.
