About this event

AI in Structural Engineering: The Transformation of Structural Engineering through Artificial Intelligence

David Martin, Associate, SE.  Degenkolb Engineers.  SEAOC Representative to NCSEA Innovation in Structural Engineering Initiative on Artificial Intelligence

Tonight’s SEAONC association meeting looks at unique challenges coming from the AI Evolution.  Following a social hour, the meeting will kick off with an inciteful interview with past NCSEA, State, and SEAONC president, Emily M. Guglielmo.

The main discussion will focus on Artificial Intelligence.  AI is already being used to enhance routine tasks such as communication, managing RFIs, tracking design and CA tasks.   It is also accelerating the software development of the tools designers use, increasing efficiency and precision across many engineering processes. However, the application of machine and deep learning in structural engineering remains largely untapped by most firms with widespread adoption still in its infancy. As a result, the full potential of AI to solve complex engineering challenges and fundamentally reshape the profession is yet to be realized.

In this presentation, Dave will explore how these emerging technologies are poised to influence the future of structural engineering, offering both significant challenges and new opportunities. The discussion will also dive into business and client-driven strategies for evaluating AI solutions, developing AI-powered workflows in-house, and ensuring that human expertise remains central to the adoption and integration of these tools. Come join us as we help to equip engineers with a balanced perspective on leveraging AI while preserving the core values and skills that define our profession. The presentation includes a lively discussion of AI advancements, how AI tools can improve business practices, the practical and usable machine learning applications that firms of all sizes can adopt, the potential of cutting-edge AI to affect structural engineering, whether emerging AI startups are positioning themselves as suppliers or future competitors, and a discussion on the ethical integration of AI.
